The Great Himalaya Trail – Climate Smart Celebrity Trek in January,2012

Record setting mountaineer Apa Sherpa and Ambassador of Climate for Life Campaign Dawa Steven Sherpa are all set to take the 1,700 KM and 120 days long Great Himalaya Trail on 15th January, 2012. The event which is titled ‘The Great Himalaya Trail-Climate Smart Celebrity Trek (GHT-CSCT)’ is organized by the Himalayan Climate Initiative (HCI), Government of Nepal, DFID, British Council, SNV and GHTDP Partners. Organizers plan to solicit support from national and international celebrities for this event. The aim of the event is to raise global awareness on the impacts of Climate Change in the Himalayas and establish GHT as the world’s highest long-distance walking trail and Nepal’s newest tourism product among travelers and tourism professionals worldwide and highlight it’s pro-poor, sustainable and “climate smart” approach.
Taking on the 1,700 KM and 120 days long Great Himalaya Trail, participants of GHT-CSCT will begin their trek from Ghunsa in Taplejung district and will complete it at Darchula in Far Western Nepal. They will traverse through the foot hills of eight of the world’s highest peaks and 20 districts in the mid-hills and low mountains of Nepal.
