Explore Himalaya had an opportunity to organize a multi-activity trip for a group of 27 students & 3 teachers from King George V School, Hong Kong. The group travelled from Kathmandu to Pokhara and then trekked to Ghandruk during their 10 days stay (8th-18th October 2011).
Main highlights of this trip were:
- Cultural exchange and interaction with Nepalese school students
- Orphanage visit
- Visit to local health post & donation of medicines
- Attending a Nepali Cultural Dance Workshop at Sadhana Kala Kendra
- 6 days Ghorepani & Poon hill trek
After spending a night in Kathmandu, the group flew to Pokhara . In Pokhara, they visited the SOS school and interacted with the local students. Lively games & interaction sessions like group painting and dancing proved to be ice breakers and had the visiting students and the local students bonding like old friends. Later, the group was driven to Nayapul from where they began their trekking adventure. The trek that was chosen for the group (Ghorepani & Poon Hill Trek)is a soft grade trek, ideal for school groups and beginners.The main attraction of this trek is the Gurung Heritage Village of Ghandruk and mesmerizing views of Himalayan giants like the Annapurna Himal, Dhaulagiri and Manslu from the view point at Poon hill. At Ghandruk, the group was welcomed by students and teachers of Shree Nehsram Bara Secondary school. The school group donated medicines and stationery to the local school.
From Ghandruk, the group trekked to Tadapani, Ghorepani and Poon hill staying overnight at each place in a tented camp, passing farmlands, Gurung villages and magnificent mountain scenery along the way. They visited the local health post in Ghandruk & Ghorepani villages and donated medicines.After trekking for six delightful days the group retraced their steps back to Nayapul. At Nayapul, they were greeted warmly by students and teachers of Nava Jyoti Tham Secondary School. Ama Shamuha (community mothers’ group) greeted them with floral garlands. A fun & lively interaction session followed where the visiting & local students played games, painted and danced together. Later they were driven to Pokhara city.
After arriving in Kathmandu the group visited ‘The Children’s Home’ in Khokana, Kathmandu.’The Children’s Home’ is a shelter for destitute children and orphans. At the center, the group interacted and played with the children. Later on they were taken for a guided sightseeing tour. Before departing Kathmandu, the group attended a Nepalese Cultural Dance Workshop at Sadhana Kala Kendra, a Nepalese dance school. Though it was a brief visit, they did learn some Nepali songs and local dance moves from the tutors. Thus the young visitors from King George V School, Hong Kong ended their Nepal trip on a merry note, literally with a song and a dance!
