
On July 30, 2016, Saturday, the official inauguration ceremony of the Nuwakot Heritage Village Project(NHVP) was held in Nuwakot. 3 houses construction was started to kick off the project during the ceremony. The chief guest of the program, Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil Aviation, Mr. Prem Kumar Rai, officially started the project by planting the first brick of the Heritage village that is to be restored. Various other profiled persons of Nuwakot and Nepalese tourism sector and local people attended the program organized by the heritage village.

The massive earthquake of April 25, 2015, and its aftershock made a major impact in Nuwakot District. Several people lost their lives and their shelters while many were left injured. The earthquake destructed the entire Durbar area of Nuwakot which is one of the major tourist destinations in Nepal. Nuwakot district, the first capital of Nepal is also known as the origin of Shah Dynasty. It was also the trade route for Nepal and Tibet.

Nuwakot has its own significance with both historical and cultural aspect of Nepalese tourism industry. Nuwakot Heritage Village Project is an initiation to rebuild and restore the entire village inside the Durbar area that was damaged during the earthquake. The project focuses on the restoration of the village through its original design through a sustainable approach keeping its cultural traditional identity and importance intact. The area includes 420 houses. The project is expected to be completed in next six years.
