Chaite Dashain so named because it falls in the month of Chaitra. This festival celebrates the victory of good over evil. Thus Goddess Durga is worshipped during this festival . According to a Hindu legend it was Goddess Durga who helped Rama (an incarnation of Vishnu) to slay the demon king Ravana. Ram killed Ravana on the 9th of the Nepali month Chaitra, so the second day of the festival is called Ram Nawami (‘Nawami’ stands for the ninth day).

On this day Hindus offer animal sacrifices to Goddess Durga at the temples dedicated to Goddess Durga and other Goddesses who are manifestations of Goddess Durga. Water buffaloes and goats are sacrificed at the temples’ altars. Major sacrifices take place near the Hanuman Dhoka palace at the guardhouse and also at Bhaktapur Durbar Square.
