Originally built as a palace by a Rana noble almost a century ago, the building was converted into a heritage hotel by Late Ram Shanker Shrestha in 1964. Initially operations were started with 23 rooms with the property being on rent . The entire property was eventually purchased from the Rana family thus making Shanker a fully functional hotel with international standards.
Situated just a stone throw away from the tourist hub of Thamel and Durbar Marg, Shanker Hotel faces the Northern side of the Narayanhiti Palace Museum. The hotel retains most of the old world charm and elegance of the former palace building. At present the hotel boasts of 94 luxury rooms, including 12 suites with king size beds and an adjacent sitting room that can accommodate up to ten guests.
The hotel has two restaurants, two bars and a coffee shop. Dining at the Kailash restaurant with its carved ceiling, intricately worked walls, bejewelled mirrors and chandeliers will make you feel like royalty . Trained Chefs at the hotel dish out palatable and mouth watering Continental, Chinese, Indian and Nepalese cuisine.
The hotel also features facilities for meetings and incentives. Other facilities include wireless internet access, swimming pool, gift shops, airport transfers etc.
