KATHMANDU

Kathmandu, the largest city in Nepal, serves as both the political and cultural heart of the nation. In recent years, Kathmandu has experienced rapid growth typical of major urban centers. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, the warmth and friendliness of its people remain a refreshing constant. The city is home to a Living Goddess and is vibrant with ceremonial processions and festivals that fill the streets, attracting throngs of devotees seeking blessings. These religious celebrations are steeped in rich legend and feature colorful chariot processions and masked dancers, often believed to be possessed by the spirits. Some sites that you will visit are Pashupatinath, Boudhanath Stupa , Sankhu etc. 

LALITPUR

Lalitpur, also known as Patan, the city of artisans, is located just 5 km southeast of Kathmandu. This vibrant city is renowned for its exceptional craftsmen who have skillfully preserved ancient techniques such as repousse and lost wax casting, allowing for the creation of stunning sculptures. Wandering through Patan, you’ll encounter narrow streets lined with charming brick houses and a wealth of well-preserved Hindu temples, Buddhist monasteries (vihars), and remarkable monuments that reflect its rich heritage. The air is filled with the rhythmic sounds of artisans at work, meticulously shaping intricate statuettes. Here, Hinduism and Buddhism have coexisted harmoniously for centuries, each faith enriching the other. This remarkable religious harmony is a defining feature of Patan, making it a captivating destination for those seeking to experience the depth of Nepal’s cultural landscape. You will visit National Botanical Garden, Kumbeshwar Temple, Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, Patan Durbar Square etc.

BHAKTAPUR

Located on a hill at an altitude of 1,401 meters, Bhaktapur, also known as Bhadgaon or the City of Devotees, is a captivating tourist destination that transports visitors back in time. Located just 12 kilometers east of Kathmandu along the Arniko Highway, which leads to the Chinese border, this ancient city spans 6.4 square kilometers and has preserved its authentic atmosphere. Stroll along the brick-paved roads and admire the charming red brick houses, which reflect a lifestyle rooted in medieval traditions. Bhaktapur is renowned for its vibrant pottery and exquisite woodcarving, evident in the beautifully crafted items displayed throughout the squares and adorning the windows of local homes and temples.

FESTIVALS

LHOSAR

The festival of Lhosar, also known by variations such as Losar and Lhochhar, signifies the New Year and is commonly referred to as ‘Barga.’ The term ‘Lho’ translates to year, sambat, age, or Barga, while ‘chhar’ or ‘saar’ signifies new. Together, ‘Lho’ and ‘saar’ convey the idea of a New Year or new Barga.

In Nepal, three major Lhosar festivals are celebrated by distinct indigenous communities. Tamang community marks Sonam Lhosar as their new year, Sherpa community welcomes their new year, Gyalpo Lhosar, Gurung community, another indigenous group, observes Tamu Lhosar as their new year.

BUDDHA JAYANTI

Buddha Jayanti is a significant observance for the Tamang, Sunuwar, Magar, Sherpa, Bhote, Hyolmo, and Thakali communities, commemorating Buddha Purnima—a day that marks the enlightenment of Gautam Buddha. During this sacred occasion, devotees engage in special pujas and various programs that highlight the profound teachings and philosophy of Buddha. Public spaces are adorned with paintings and images of Buddha, while Aanandakuti Bihar showcases the Swayambhu, a revered relic associated with Buddha, drawing the admiration of the faithful. As the sun rises, stupas, Bihars, and homes are illuminated with colorful lights and lamps, creating a vibrant atmosphere of devotion

INDRA JATRA

Indra Jatra is a lively and significant festival celebrated in Kathmandu, attracting dignitaries like the Prime Minister and President. At its core is the worship of Indra, the King of the Gods, whose myth involves his capture for plucking a sacred flower, symbolizing the connection between the divine and the earthly. The festival kicks off with the raising of a ten-meter flagpole adorned with Indra’s banner, followed by processions featuring images of Indra displayed on platforms, illustrating his human-like struggles. As night falls, families honor departed loved ones by lighting butter lamps, creating a reflective atmosphere amidst the festivities. A unique highlight is the unveiling of the fierce Swet Bhairava sculpture, from which traditional rice wine flows, drawing crowds eager for a blessing. Known as Yenya Punhi, Indra Jatra is one of Kathmandu’s oldest festivals, celebrating both myth and community identity.

RATO MACHHINDRANATH JATRA

Rato Machhindranath is a revered deity in the Kathmandu Valley, embodying both Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. Known as “Bungadeya” (meaning “watering place”), he symbolizes water, rain, and fertility, crucial for agriculture. His legend tells of his miraculous survival after being cast into the ocean and subsequently emerging enlightened after absorbing divine teachings from Lord Shiva. This tale underscores his role as the Rain God and protector of crops.

SETO MACHHINDRANATH JATRA

Seto Machhindranath Jatra is a lively three-day chariot procession honoring Lord Seto Machhindranath, the revered rain god, primarily celebrated by the Newar community in the Kathmandu Valley. Typically held at the end of March or early April, the procession winds through key areas such as Jamal, Ason, Indra Chowk, Hanumandhoka, and culminates at Lagan. Each day, as the chariot reaches its destination, a ceremonial salute is performed with rifle fire, enhancing the grandeur of the event. Seto Machhindranath is also identified with Awalokiteshwor, a significant Buddhist figure.

GAI JATRA

This unique event honors the memory of loved ones who have passed away, allowing families to commemorate their loss while embracing a spirit of mirth and community. Typically celebrated in July or August, Gai Jatra features families of the deceased sending children, often adorned as cows, to parade through the lively streets. The festival carries deep significance, as the cow, or “Gai” in Nepali, is revered as a symbol of wealth and abundance in Hinduism. Gai Jatra serves as a poignant reminder of those who are no longer with us, offering a way to share sorrow while finding solace in the knowledge that their loved ones are at peace. 

DASHAIN

Dashain, celebrated annually in September or October, is the most significant festival in Nepal, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. This vibrant celebration spans fifteen days and is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, particularly the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. The festival kicks off with a flurry of activity, as people travel to their home villages, shop for new clothes, and prepare for family reunions. Markets buzz with excitement as families buy offerings for the gods and prepare for feasts, involving the sacrifice of goats, ducks, and chickens. 

TIHAR

Experience the enchanting celebration of Tihar, a vibrant festival of lights and colors! This five-day event honors Yama, the God of Death, while the worship of Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth, takes center stage. Throughout the festival, homes shimmer with the glow of candles, oil lamps, and electric lights. The streets come alive with festive decorations and garlands, creating a dazzling spectacle.
