Naag Panchami – Worship of the ‘naags’ or serpents

Today is Naag Panchami a festival dedicated to the worship of ‘naag’ or serpents. For Hindus serpents are usually divine beings associated with important Hindu dieties like Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. They are believed to bring in rain and keep the water sources from drying out. Hindus worship the serpents on this day with a special naag puja and paste images of naags on their main doors so that the serpent god may protect their household from snakes and scorpions.
In Kathmandu, devotees are thronging to the major Naag worshipping sites , ie, Naag pokhari, Naag Bahal etc to offer homage to the serpent god.
