German Language Training for the Tour Leaders of Explore Himalaya

Teaching German language to tour guides of Explore Himalya

The breathtaking peaks of the Himalayas have long been a destination for adventure seekers and mountaineers from around the world. For Guides of Nepal, possessing a diverse skill set is crucial to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of their clients. With the growth of German-speaking tourists visiting Himalayas, the demand for Nepalese guides proficient in the German language is increasing.

We at Explore Himalaya Travel and Adventure have also seen a recent influx of German groups and tourists visiting Nepal. Since we believe in personalizing each client’s experiences, we have recently started to train our guides in the German language- Level A1, A2 and B1.

The benefits of German language training for our mountain guides are many folds. Firstly, it enables them to communicate with German-speaking tourists in their native language, which immediately breaks the ice. It builds trust and rapport between guides and clients, creating a more enjoyable and enriching experience for everyone involved. Additionally, the ability to speak German can also provide a competitive edge for the guides in an industry where customer satisfaction and safety are of the most  importance.

Guides can upskill themselves by learning a language, as Nepal witnesses tourists from many countries throughout the year. This proficiency in a foreign language opens up opportunities for these guides to work with German speaking clients. Also, help them in broadening their scope of employment and potentially leading to higher-paying positions. It has the ability to create a niche market for them which opens the path to better remunerations and incentives.

Effective German language training for Nepal’s mountain guides requires tailoring the curriculum to meet their specific needs and requirements. Therefore, the training focused on practical language skills that are directly applicable to their roles as guides. It includes vocabulary related to trekking, mountaineering, first aid, and emergency procedures. Some cultural aspects, customs, and expectations of German tourists are also incorporated into the training to help the guides develop a deeper understanding of their clientele.

The current training is led by Mr. Dinesh Sukubhattu, one of our own Tour Leaders. He started learning the German language in 2013 at the Campus of International Languages (Bishwa Bhasa Campus) in Kathmandu. He is also a licensed Trekking Guide and also works as a Language Instructor. Wearing many hats, he currently works as a German Speaking  Tour and Trekking guide/leader in the Himalayas. And enjoys helping his Nepali fellow guides learn the German language during the off season.

He also believes like him, learning the German language will not only help the Guides get established in the Tourism sector in Nepal. Furthermore, it will also lead to gain some international exposure and experience.

The success of German language training for mountain guides in Nepal relies not only on the acquisition of language skills but also on the support and investment from trekking agencies, tour operators, and governmental organizations. Collaborative efforts to provide accessible language training programs, financial support, and incentives for guides to pursue language proficiency can significantly contribute to the overall improvement of the guiding industry in Nepal.
