Nepal has become a popular destination for foreigners- be it for its cultural tours or for the more adventurous- the arduous treks to some of the highest and most breathtaking points in the world. Of late Nepal has also been welcoming legions of Buddhist travelers from all around the world, who come searching for meaning and purpose. Nepal is a wonderful option for anyone looking to immerse in Buddhist learnings, education, meditation and spiritual retreats.

Recently we had the opportunity of organizing the Annapurna Base Camp for a couple from Italy- Laura and Massimo. Through our office we had been communicating with them via email and WhatsApp. Between all their questions and answers, one day Massimo had a special request- He introduced himself as the fiancé of Laura and requested to have a Buddhist wedding in the time they would be in Nepal. Having performed Hindu style weddings for western couples before, this was not an entirely new request for us. However we did need to manage the logistics like timings and details of where their wedding could be culminated.

Massimo had another request- that this would be a surprise for Laura and she should not know about it until the start of the ceremony. He had advised us that before the start of the trek the couple were actually coming to Kathmandu a week earlier and had enrolled in a meditation course at the Kopan monastery. So he requested if we could arrange a spontaneous Buddhist wedding at a monastery right after their course at Kapan got over and before the trek started.

With this in mind, we started getting more information on the possibilities. We were in touch with Massimo all the while. Finally through the guidance of one of our Guides, we were able to arrange for the wedding on March 9, the day their course in Kopan got over and before they boarded their tourist bus to Pokhara.

Luckily the stars aligned on March 9 and we were able to pick the lovely couple from Kopan and take them to Boudhanath Stupa for the wedding, even though there were huge traffic jams due to protests in Kathmandu. The couple were fascinated on seeing the Boudha stupa and were even more excited that we would stop and take a round. Massimo of course knew what was going on but Laura was unaware of the bigger surprise.

Once we entered the monastery, Massimo slipped out an envelope with a letter for Laura to read. We could sense he had been excited throughout the drive and had been waiting for this moment. As we walked inside and bowed to the Gurus, we left Laura to read Massimo’s notes and recollect herself. The smile in her eyes were a sight to behold and Massimo could not hold his excitement either. We had not seen anything like this either and were very excited for them also.

After getting a hold of the situation, Laura finally came inside and we guided the couple to Guru who would lead the ceremony.

Luckily for the couple a very senior monk was available to tie them in matrimony. He conducted the ceremony with Buddhist prayers, blessings, and traditional Buddhist rituals. The couple bowed before him and received his blessings affectionately. They made offerings, and recited vows emphasizing compassion, mindfulness, and harmony. The ceremony was simple yet deeply meaningful, focusing on spiritual connection rather than grand festivities. The couple later exchanged rings (again a surprise from Massimo). The ceremony left an aura in the couple and we who were witness to their special day, were also left mesmerized.

The couple then enjoyed an adventurous week, trekking up to the Annapurna Base Camp and returned home with many wonderful memories.
